From Carnegie Hall to the Hollywood Bowl, trumpeter Randy Lee has performed in some of the world’s most prestigious concert venues, giving appearances throughout the Americas, Europe, and Asia and is currently the Assistant Professor of Trumpet at the University of Florida, principal trumpet of the Naples Brass, as well the Gainesville Orchestra. Spanning a career as a soloist, versatile performer, teacher, and a recording artist, he can be heard on Deutsche Grammophon, Mark Records, Centaur Records, Tantara Records, international television and radio broadcasts, albums, television shows, commercials, video games, movie trailers, and short films.
Randy has premiered and recorded new solo literature for the trumpet and presented guest artist recitals at various universities around the globe. Premiers include James Oliverio’s World House Trumpet Concerto in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with the Valdosta Symphony; Columbian composer/pianist Mauricio Arias’ Variaciones fantasticas sobre La Guanena for solo trumpet and the UF Symphonic band, world premiere and Carnegie Hall debut of Arias’ Rapsodia Camaleonica concerto for trumpet, piano, and orchestra; Anthony Maglione’s The Mystic Trumpeter cantata for trumpet, vocal soloists, choir, brass ensemble, percussion, and organ; and other works. Randy recorded The Mystic Trumpeter and Ian Coleman’s The Trumpet Sounds, Within-a My Soul for solo trumpet and choir on The Trumpet Sounds album for Centaur Records. Additional solo appearances with various ensembles include the Bells at Temple Square, Salty Crickets Composers Collective, Azlo Orchestra, and Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 with the University of Florida Symphony Orchestra. Randy’s latest project, La Trompeta Camaleonica album featuring six new works for trumpet from South American composers, should be released Fall 2019 on Mark Records.
As a versatile trumpeter and collaborator, Randy has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Utah Symphony Orchestra, Jacksonville Symphony, Hong Kong Sinfonietta and Opera Hong Kong as guest principal trumpet, Tucson Symphony Orchestra as substitute principal trumpet, Orchestra at Temple Square with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Philip Glass Ensemble, Utah Festival Opera and Musical Theatre, Utah Wind Symphony, Gainesville Symphony, Valdosta Symphony, Phoenix Chorale, Phoenix Boys Choir, Salt River Brass as principal solo cornet, Scottsdale Arts Orchestra as principal trumpet, Utah Regional Ballet, and various chamber ensembles including the Potsdam Brass Quintet, Searslee (trumpet and tuba), Acoustic (trumpet, guitar, and voice) and the Banff Brass Week’s Crossover Quintet and Brass Ensemble. He has also performed and toured with acts such as Johnny Mathis, Weird Al, Roy Orbison Hologram Tour, Cirque Musica Holiday, Irish Tenors, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Manheim Steamroller, Rocktopia, and others.
Prior to the University of Florida, Dr. Lee served as Visiting Assistant Professor of Trumpet at State University of New York Potsdam and Brigham Young University – Idaho. He has also gained experience as a teaching assistant at Arizona State University, University of California Los Angeles, Brigham Young University. Dr. Lee has given clinics and masterclasses at various conservatories, universities, high schools and middle schools around the world. He holds degrees from BYU (BA), where he studied with David Brown, UCLA (MM) with Jens Lindemann, and ASU (DMA) under the tutelage of Regents’ Professor David Hickman. Other teachers include K. Newell Dayley, Nick Norton, Donald Green, and Jay Posteraro. Dr. Lee has also served as the International Trumpet Guild’s Conference Trumpet Preludes Coordinator. When not performing or teaching, he enjoys spending time with his beautiful wife and children.
