The Gran Canaria Big-Band began to form part of the Canarian musical heritage in 1997 and from then on work began on the standard Big-Band repertoire and various concerts were held starting from the Las Palmas Conservatory of Music.
An excellent opportunity would soon arrive offered by the direction of the Canary Islands Jazz Festival in 1999, performing at said Festival, sharing the stage with the excellent singer Carmen Lundy and achieving great success. Subsequently, the group goes on a tour of the Canary Islands sponsored by La Caja de Canarias.
One of the activities of this group to highlight is the production together with the Norwegian singer Cornelius Lund of a program for Norwegian public television. This program reaches high audience ratings, making the Gran Canaria Big-Band known for the first time. time abroad.
It is worth highlighting the resounding success in the last four editions of the Canary Islands Jazz Festival (2004/2005/2006/2007), with great acceptance among the public and the press, and with great praise from Roben Ford himself with whom they shared stage. The Gran Canaria Big Band also had a presence at the Spañjazz, organized by the “Alfredo Kraus” Auditorium Foundation, together with the Catalan singer Laura Simó in 2005. It was also the group in residence at the I Telde Jazz Festival, May in 2007, with resounding critical and public success.
In 2007 they recorded the first album of this formation, titled “Gran Canaria Big Band”, as a tribute to the group’s career and its loyal followers. This album was presented at the Barcelona Auditorium, with the Catalan press cataloging the Gran Canaria Big Band as one of the most solid groups on the Spanish jazz scene.
At Christmas 2008 they celebrated these dates with Laura Simó, the voice that has accompanied them in this last stage.
